Flow Jet Pump

Shallow well jet pump question?

My pump has suddenly started kicking on about once a minute. Even when water is not being used. I KNOW there is no leak anywhere in the system. Why would the system lose pressure and need to kick on? Frankly, I don't understand how the water stays under pressure in the pressure tank....why doesn't the water go back into the well as soon as the pump turns off> I suspect that the jet pump has some type of device built in that prevents the water from flowing back....and that this is where my problem lies. Is there a simple seal that I can replace? Your help is greatly appreciated in advance.

  1. you may need to replace the pressure switch, they can go bad
  2. A check valve between the pump and the well riser holds pressure in the tank. If there is a pressure gage, watch it. If the check valve isn't closing, the pressure will drop, thus starting the pump again. The check valve can be disassembled and cleaned.
  3. Sounds like your pressure tank may have a pin hole leak in the diaphram. if it's the check valve, you would hear water flowing through it.
  4. If it was your check valve, then you would have to prime the pump each time to use it. I would see about getting a larger pressure tank. 20 gallons or so. that way each time you flush the toilet, the pump doesn't need to come on with each flush. or if you are just washing your hands, and your pump will last longer too.
  5. I would guess the check valve or foot valve is leaking. That is what keeps the water under pressure that you are wondering about. Sometimes they start to leak, allowing the pressure to drop. Usually with a shallow well the check valve is near the pump. Look for a brass fitting in the pipe. Email if you need more help.
