Flow Jet Pump

can I make an indoor manmade river with a submersible pump?

I wanted to make an indoor manmade river for an art project. the water at one end would ideally be sent to beginning to give the impression of a constant flow, ie. a real river. would it be possible to do this by attaching a submersible pump to one end of the river, and tracing it back to the beginning?...or would the horizontal path cause problems?

  1. You can do this easily by tilting one end a little. Have the water flow to a small container below the "river" with the pump in it. Have the water outlet attached to the higher end. I would suggest putting something like a sponge to keep the water from flowing too fast and you'll end up having water splahed all over the place. I did something like this last Oct when one of my client wanted a river in his house and he said he wants to place fish in it and lt his son do some fishing. If there are going to be fishes or it's going to be a permenant piece, be sure to install a filter to keep the smell away. If you're using a submersible pump, be sure to keep it in the water to prevent overheating.
  2. A submersible pump should work fine. You will just have to tinker a bit with your head flow, as you don't want a gusher pointing up to the ceiling. Using various reducers to drop the size of the outflow, or putting a rock or something to flatten the water stream, should take care of that. You'll want to make sure that you get a pump that has enough power to push the water back up to the head of your stream, too. This sounds like a really intriguing project. I'd like to see it when it's done! Good luck - hope this helps.
  3. I don't have anything further to add besides what was said. I just wanted to say it sounds like a great idea and I hope you share photos online. :)
  4. you must tilt it al little probabaly a 25 degree angle or more. real rivers arent perfectly strait any ways. also make sure there is a pond at the end so it doesnt all over flow
